Created by Dutch cartographer Joan Vinckeboons, this map commissioned by the Dutch West India Company was critical for safe navigation of the areas waters as trade routes were becoming more prevalent in the region. The map identifies the Bahamas Channel (i.e., the Gulf Stream) that served as the main shipping channel along the east coast of North America for return voyages to Europe.
